Archipelago is an explorable virtual environment created algorithmically from the contents of the artist’s Google user account. Location tracking data, activity patterns, and email are all used to generate the landscape, weather patterns, and procedural soundscape. Drawing on folklore of the selkie, a shapeshifting seal whose enchanted skin is a site of both power and vulnerability, the work probes the complexities of our relationship to user data, analytics, and digital surveillance.
